What AllTrails does

AllTrails is one of the best-known apps for finding trails, with more than a million App Store ratings. You search hikes, bike rides and runs near you, read recent reviews and conditions, and follow the route on a map. The free app covers the basics. Plus adds offline maps and wrong-turn alerts, and Peak adds custom routes.

Search trails for hiking, biking and running near you
Recent reviews, photos and conditions
Track your hike and see your spot on the map
Plus: offline maps and wrong-turn alerts
Plus: weather planning, 3D maps and live sharing
Peak: custom routes and trail activity heatmaps

AllTrails is where a lot of people start when they want to go for a hike. You search by area, read what others said about the trail recently, check photos and conditions, and save the ones you like. When you head out, the app shows your spot on the trail and records your activity.

Plus ($35.99 a year) adds the tools for going farther out: offline maps for when you lose signal, alerts if you wander off the trail, weather and air quality planning, 3D topo maps, live sharing with friends and no ads. Peak ($79.99 a year) adds tools to draw your own routes and see heatmaps of recent trail activity.

Reviews praise how friendly it is but note its maps and data are less detailed than tools like Gaia GPS, and track import is clunky. For finding a great trail fast, it's the easy pick. Just get Plus or another offline map before heading somewhere remote.
