Memrise
An app that teaches words with clips of locals actually speaking.
What Memrise does
Memrise helps you learn the words and phrases people really use. Lessons pair vocabulary with short videos of native speakers, and AI chat partners let you practice speaking in everyday scenarios. Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French and German are among its many languages. There's a free plan with ads and limits.
Memrise grew out of flashcards, and spaced review is still at its core: words come back right before you'd forget them. What sets it apart is the video. You hear real people say each phrase at natural speed and with real accents, which helps train your ear for real speech.
Newer features add role-play scenarios and AI chat partners, so you can try out what you learned in a low-stakes conversation. The free plan limits lessons, videos and conversations and shows ads. Pro removes those limits.
Reviewers like it for vocabulary and listening, but grammar teaching is light. Memrise is a great companion to a course or a tutor, and a good pick if you want to understand people talking at normal speed.
