What Apple Translate does

Apple Translate comes free on iPhone and iPad. It translates voice, text and camera views, runs conversations with automatic language detection, and can work fully offline once you download languages. Its language list is shorter than Google Translate's, so check that yours is covered.

Voice, text, camera and photo translation
Conversation mode with automatic language detection
Full on-device mode after you download languages
Live Translation with supported AirPods
Works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

If you have an iPhone, you already own a solid translator. Speak or type, point the camera at a sign, or pick a photo from your library. In conversation mode it figures out who is speaking which language, so you can just talk and watch the bubbles fill in.

On-device mode is the standout. Download both languages and everything happens on your phone, no signal needed, which is great for flights and roaming. Offline results may be a little less accurate than online ones. With supported AirPods, Live Translation can play the translation in your ears for a short list of languages.

The language list is the limit. It covers major languages but far fewer than Google Translate, and it only runs on Apple devices. Its App Store rating is low, though you rarely need to download it, since it ships with the phone.
