What Microsoft Translator does

Microsoft Translator is a free translator for text, speech and photos in more than 100 languages. It has a split-screen view for one-on-one conversations and natural-sounding voices for playback. There are no in-app purchases on the App Store. Offline language packs are an Android thing, not an iPhone one.

Text, voice and photo translation in 100+ languages
Split-screen view for one-on-one conversations
Natural voices for hearing translations
Translate text in images and share the result
No in-app purchases listed

Microsoft Translator covers the basics well and costs nothing. Type or speak a phrase and hear it back in a natural voice, or snap a photo of a sign and read the translated text over the image.

For talking with someone face to face, split-screen mode puts one half of the screen toward each person, so you can each read in your own language. Microsoft has retired the old multi-device conversation feature, so older guides that mention joining a shared room on several phones are out of date.

Offline is the catch. A 2026 review citing Microsoft's own FAQ says offline packs are not supported on iOS, while Android still offers them. If you are on an iPhone and heading somewhere without data, pick Google Translate or Apple Translate instead.
