VoiceTra
An app that translates speech in 33 languages, including Hindi.
What VoiceTra does
VoiceTra is a free speech translator made by NICT, a Japanese government research institute. It covers 33 languages, including Hindi, Filipino, Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, Nepali, Arabic and Spanish. Two people can talk through one phone, and it can detect which language is being spoken.
VoiceTra was built to help visitors in Japan talk with locals, and it grew into a broad speech translator. Speak, and you see and hear the translation, with a back-translation so you can check it understood you. Flip the direction and the other person answers in their own language.
Its language list is unusually good for South and Southeast Asia. Hindi, Filipino, Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, Nepali, Sinhala, Khmer and Myanmar sit next to the big European languages. For languages without speech input, you can type instead.
It is free, but it needs a connection, and NICT says it is a research app, so your recordings help improve its technology. For business use, NICT points you to its licensed services.
