What Waze does

Waze is a free driving app built on reports from the people using it. Drivers flag crashes, hazards, closures and speed cameras, and Waze uses that to reroute you and update your arrival time. It runs on iPhone and Android and works with CarPlay and Android Auto.

Live rerouting around traffic, crashes and closures
Alerts reported by other drivers
Speed limits, speed cameras and lane guidance
Toll prices and an avoid-tolls option
Gas, EV charging and parking along your route
CarPlay and Android Auto support

Waze is made for one job: getting you there by car with fewer surprises. While you drive, it updates your route and arrival time as traffic changes, and other drivers' reports show up on the map as alerts for crashes, construction, potholes, bad weather and police.

It also shows speed limits and a speedometer, lane guidance at tricky exits, and toll prices with the option to avoid tolls. Along your route you can see gas stations, EV chargers and parking, and you can plan a trip by when you want to leave or arrive. It plugs into audio apps so your music or podcast keeps playing.

It isn't the app for walking or transit, and it shows ads. If you mostly drive and want to know what's ahead before you hit it, Waze is a strong pick.
