What Shoeboxed does
Shoeboxed is a receipt scanner and organizer for small businesses and the self-employed. You scan receipts with your phone, or stuff a prepaid envelope with paper ones and mail it in to be digitized. It also tracks mileage and builds expense reports. There's no free plan.
Shoeboxed is for anyone with a shoebox of receipts, in some cases a real one. You can scan receipts with the phone app as you go, and on most plans you also get Magic Envelopes: you fill one with paper receipts, mail it off, and the scans show up in your account. That helps with a backlog, not just new receipts.
Once receipts are in, they're sorted and searchable, and you can turn them into expense reports or a CSV for your accountant. Mileage tracking is included on every plan. The Pro plan and up add Gmail receipt sync and a connection to QuickBooks Online and Xero, and higher plans let more people share one account.
The tradeoff is cost. There's no free tier, and the cheapest plan has tight limits on scans and mailed envelopes. If you only have a few receipts, a free scanner app will do. If paper is piling up and you'd rather pay to make it go away, Shoeboxed is built for that.
