What Strava does

Strava is a tracker for running, cycling, walking and dozens of other sports. You record an activity with your phone or a watch, and it shows up in a feed where friends can follow along. The free version covers tracking and the social side. A subscription adds deeper stats, route tools and goals.

GPS tracking for running, cycling, walking, hiking and 40+ other sports
Syncs with Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit and other devices
Social feed, kudos, clubs and monthly challenges
Segments with leaderboards (full boards need the subscription)
Route builder and heatmaps on the paid plan
Strength workout logging with sets, reps and weights

Strava is where a lot of runners and cyclists log everything. Start an activity on your phone, or sync it from a Garmin, Apple Watch, Fitbit or similar device, and you get your route, pace and splits. Friends can follow you and give kudos, and clubs and challenges keep things social.

Segments are the famous part. These are short stretches of road or trail where everyone's times are compared, so you can race people you've never met. The free version lets you see segments, but full leaderboards sit behind the subscription, along with things like advanced route building, heatmaps and long-term training trends.

If you want a coach that tells you what to run each day, Strava on its own is not that. It's a record of what you did, plus a community. Runna, which Strava owns, is the coaching side, and the two are sold as a bundle. If you mostly want motivation from friends and a clean log of your workouts, the free version goes a long way.
